Olawale Ibrahim Ashimi known as Brymo has spoken out about the reason he lost at the 2023 All Africa Music Award (AFRIMA).

A petition against his nomination signed by over 47, 000 Nigerians online because of controversial comments he made before the presidential election preceded the award.
Brymo in an Instagram post suggested that his loss at the award was not related to the petitions against his nomination.

He said, “AFRIMA nominated my song ‘Esan’, so I forgot all that and looked forward to the event. But I’m no longer a singer, so I don’t want it.
“There’s a songwriting category, but they shouldn’t nominate sonic artists. I was looking forward to it anyway, but I got into trouble speaking about Biafra leaving and staying.”

Brymo later apologized for his offensive tweets and lost the award to Mali-based Iba One. In a recent interview, Brymo clarified that he was no longer a musician but a sonic artist and was looking forward to the event.

The against Brymo was launched by Charles Ogundele who cited the singer’s anti-Igbo comments as the reason for disqualification.

Prior to the petition, Brymo tweeted that “As long as there are talks by prominent people from Igboland about Biafra, an Igbo presidency will be a pipe dream.”
He denied that the loss had anything to do with the southeast fracas and did not attack the award afterward.
“So, I stayed out of AFRIMA and didn’t attack the award afterward. Not winning the award had nothing to do with southeast fracas. Everything only just came together,’’ Brymo said.
