The sparks, which started on Tuesday night brought traffic to halt as commuters scampered to safety along the busy Ikorodu road near the Maryland Bridge.

However, quick intervention by officials of Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC), who switched off the power line saved the day.

Earlier, a video had gone viral, showing electric cables near the popular Independence tunnel sparking fire not too far from the powerline.

Sources said the spark was allegedly caused by a hanging cable left unattended for days by IKEDC.

A staff of the power station, who confirmed that there were fire sparks on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, said the power base was quickly switched off before it turned into a full-blown fire.

He said: “Everything is under control now because we promptly switched off the power base. No life was lost during the incident, but there was outrage among commuters in the area.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Amodu Shuaibu, who confirmed the incident to The Guardian, said: “The incident was not reported to us when it started on Tuesday, but the Electricity Distribution Company (DisCo) was informed and they switched off the light. The fire didn’t last more than five minutes.

“Ikeja Disco should be commended for its prompt response. No casualty was reported.”
