Traders escape death as Lagos Fire Service combats Balogun highrise building fire

Traders at 43, Martins Street, Balogun, Lagos Island today escaped death during the fire incident that rocked the building at 11:12 a.m.

The intervention of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service in collaboration with other emergency responders prevented the whole building from being razed down.

The Fire which was reported, Sunday via the State Command and Control Center is being put out by a consortium of emergency responders given the nature of the incident.

According to the Director, of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Adeseye Margaret, on the arrival of the Lagos Firefighting Crews, the Fire was met intense on the fourth floor where it started while already spreading to the fifth and sixth floors of the six-storey building.

“The intensity of the Fire requires the deployment of the Aerial Ladder Platform Fire Apparatus to extend the Firefighting prowess to capture the highrise spread and curtail it from adjoining buildings, which aim was achieved as it was confined to house 43.

The free-burning textile materials content stored in defiant of Fire Safety Regulations is responsible to fuelling the intensity which has been curtailed. The preliminary cause of the Fire is as a result of electrical upsurge.

“However, no injury or casualty has been recorded as damping down of the echelon of Fire is ongoing and subsequent updates will be made available as the situation demands.
