The Founder of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), Chief Afe Babalola, yesterday, asked the Federal Government to grant the university approval to develop COVID-19 drugs and vaccines.
Babalola stated this at the eighth convocation ceremony of the university held at Alfa Belgore Hall of the institution.
The founder of ABUAD, who accused the Federal Government agencies of sabotaging the country’s growth in health and quality education, added that ABUAD had put together scientists and medical officers to manufacture COVID-19 drugs and vaccines.
“We entered into agreement with partners in Kenya and Japan. After working day and night for many months, applications were made to the relevant government agencies. When we asked for accelerated action, we were rebuffed and they queried us on why we were in a hurry,” he said.
Babalola, who lamented the backwardness of the country, said: “Today, India is a nuclear power. It manufactures cars, railway engines and coaches, hospital equipment and aircraft. It is one of the leading countries in the manufacture of vaccines, to the extent that it donates vaccines to Nigeria among many other countries.
“It is a shame that while India has navigated itself from the club of under-developed countries into the prestigious club of developed countries, Nigeria is battling daily with the ancient cattle open-grazing system with the herders armed with AK-47 to challenge people who prevent them from destroying their farms.”
In her address, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Smiranda Olarinde, urged the graduating students to live as honest and compassionate persons and make positive impact on others.
