• We’ll ensure justice over Ibarapa crisis, says Makinde
The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), yesterday, berated the police over the arrest of about three members of Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC) that effected the arrest of Fulani herdsmen warlord terrorising residents of Ibarapa Zone, Iskilu Wakili.
The Secretary-General of YCE, Dr. Kunle Olajide, who spoke with The Guardian, yesterday, said the action was gross injustice.
“It is gross injustice. The police are certainly not helping matters by their partisan role.
“When the Federal Government and her agencies ought to concentrate on actively reconciling aggrieved parties, they are using state power to oppress one party while advancing the interest of the other.
“The Federal Government and its agencies need to reassure Nigerians that they are still committed to one nation. The Yoruba reject this partisanship. The President must call the police authorities to order,” he said.
MEANWHILE, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, yesterday, said there would not be miscarriage of justice over the arrest of suspected kidnappers in the state.
Makinde stated this during a symbolic presentation of free exercise books to students of selected secondary schools in the state at the Executive Council Chamber, Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.
The governor said that the administration was on top of the current security situation in the state. He stressed that the law defaulters, irrespective of ethnic status or religious background, would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
He also urged residents to be calm and refrain from ethnic profiling, while allowing those saddled with the responsibility of maintaining law and order to do their jobs accordingly.
Makinde said that he would be meeting with the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Ngozi Onadeko, to ensure that those culpable in fuelling insecurity in Ibarapa Zone of the state were prosecuted in line with necessary laws.
He said: “I’m aware of what is going on at Kajola in Ibarapa North Local Council of Oyo State.
“The government will do everything within its power to ensure that there is no miscarriage of justice. Anyone who has broken the law will be dealt with according to the law. I have asked the Commissioner of Police to see me today. They have given their words to do thorough investigations.
“Let’s be calm and refrain from ethnic profiling. You have put a government in place, let the government deal with the situation.”
